Just before his last breath, Mr. Cotton said to his son, “Coco, I have suffered a lot due to the modern farming era. But son, I don’t want my grand children to be born in the same world of fertilizers and pesticides. You promise me that you will never let this happen to them. Promise me that you will give them an organic life.”
Coco could not understand what his father meant. So he asked, “Daddy what is organic?” Mr. Cotton then said, “Son, organic is the form of agriculture, in which plantation is done without the use of any synthetic agricultural chemicals such as fertilizer or pesticides. It is the age old method of farming which has revived again in recent years.” Coco became excited and asked, “But daddy how is it different from regular farming?” Mr. Cotton took a deep breath and said, “In regular farming, farms are showered with pesticides and fertilizers, which is harmful for the soil as well as for the products and its users.”
He further explained, “Organic agriculture is better because it is a production system that sustains the health of soils, ecosystems and people. It is also Eco-friendly and does not harm the environment. It was during the 18th century that the artificial fertilizers was introduced to farming. However, due to it’s negative consequences a demand for organic farming method raised in mid 20th century.”
Coco wanted to know more so he asked, “But daddy, why is it harmful?” Mr. Cotton answered, “Son, that’s because most of the chemicals used in regular farming were first developed for warfare. An estimated 25 million people worldwide are poisoned by pesticides every year! 0.45 kgs of non-organic cotton harvested uses an estimated 0.15 kgs of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This is the reason why I am breathing my last so early. I don’t want my grand children to suffer as much as I did. So promise me son, you will give them an environment that is organic and Eco-friendly.”
Coco promised his father to give his coming generation a legacy that is organic and Eco-friendly. How about you??
